About Cheltenham

Cheltenham is a large town and borough on the edge of the Cotswolds in the county of Gloucestershire. Cheltenham became known as a health and holiday spa town resort following the discovery of mineral springs in 1716. This makes it a hidden gem in holiday destinations for England.

The town hosts several festivals, often attracting visitors from over the whole world, including the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Cheltenham Science Festival, the Cheltenham Music Festival, the Cheltenham Cricket Festival, and the Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival. Cheltenham and horse racing go hand in hand, the horse racing began in Cheltenham in 1815, and became a major national attraction after the establishment of the Festival in 1902. Whilst the volume of tourists visiting the spa has declined, the racecourse attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to each day of the festival each year, with such large numbers of visitors having a significant impact on the town.

The festival takes place annually in March at Cheltenham Racecourse.
